She was married for 57 years to Sol J. Stein. Bess was born in Atlanta to the late Hyman and Estelle Saul and grew up in Lawrenceville, GA before moving to Atlanta after graduating Summa Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University. As a teenager, Bess attended Ahavath Achim Synagogue Sunday School, married Sol there, the love of her life, and stayed active in Sisterhood and Hadassah. Bess is survived by her husband Sol; brother, Ralph Saul, Atlanta; five children, Dr. Leonard and Heather Stein, Chapel Hill, NC, Ron and Laura Stein, Atlanta, Dr. Lee and Jan Stein, Memphis, TN, Sharon and Barry Jacobson, Orlando, FL and Rob and Dr. Meryl Stein, Atlanta; along with ten grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 5 at 10:30 A.M. at Ahavath Achim Synagogue (600 Peachtree Battle Ave., Atlanta) followed by graveside services at Greenwood Cemetery. SOL JOSEPH STEIN Mr. Sol Joseph Stein of Atlanta, Georgia passed away on Monday, May 11, 2009 at Emory University Hospital after a brief illness. He was 91 years old. Mr. Stein was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 17, 1918 and lived in Forest City, North Carolina before moving back with his family to the Atlanta area as a young man. He is the son of the late Lee Stein, a Russian immigrant, and Sarah Sinkoe Stein. Mr. Stein was preceded in death by his wife, the late Bess Saul Stein of Lawrenceville and Atlanta, Georgia. He is survived by five children: Dr. Lenny (and Heather) Stein of Chapel Hill, NC; Ronald (and Laura Bulbin) Stein of Atlanta, GA; Dr. Lee (and Jan) Stein of Memphis, TN; Sharon Jacobson (and Barry) of Orlando, FL; and Robert (and Dr. Meryl) Stein of Atlanta, GA. During World War II, Mr. Stein attained the rank of Sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps of the U.S. Army; he was stationed in Trinidad, a major staging area for troop disbursement. He was also a member of the Jewish War Veterans. Upon the completion of his service to his country, Mr. Stein went to work with his father at The Mill End Store, a drapery and textile business located on Pryor Street in downtown Atlanta. Later, he became one of the owners of Atlanta Fixture & Sales Company, the largest restaurant supplier in the southeast. In addition to its restaurant clientele, the company also was a large office furniture contractor, so Mr. Stein dealt with county and municipal entities as well as restaurateurs. Mr. Stein was a lifelong member of the Ahavath Achim Synagogue of Atlanta. He was also recognized for over 50 years of support to the Greater Atlanta Jewish Federation. Some of the highlights of his life were touring Israel with his wife and their synagogue study group, and traveling abroad with friends. Sol Stein will be remembered as a gentleman and a gentle man. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a doting grandfather, a special uncle and a beloved friend. He will be deeply missed by all, including his 10 grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.
