331. Shelah Gershon SAUL6,22,134 was born on 12 July 1935. She died on 14 December 2020 at the age of 85 in San Diego, California, USA. Shelah Saul Michael 85, born on July 12,1935 in Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 14, 2020 at her home in San Diego,CA. At her side were husband, Kenneth Robert Michael, and daughters Pamela Michael Schmider and Hope Michael Hook. She is also survived by her son, Andrew Philip Michael and his wife Jackie Miller, son-in-laws David Harris Hook, Ernest Lee Schmider, Omar A. Rodriguez and her beloved grandchildren Alexander Finn Schmider and Spencer Michael Schmider.
A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, always gracious and soft spoken, Shelah Michael was nevertheless a force of nature. After suffering and surviving polio in her teens, which left her physically weakened, of petit stature but doubly determined, she went on to receive her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and her master’s degree in Medical Social Work from the University of Chicago, at a time when it was uncommon in the conservative south for a Jewish woman to achieve such distinction. After marrying Kenneth, in Birmingham, Alabama on August 30,1958, the couple moved to Columbus, Ohio where they began their family.
As a medical social worker she focused on children, disabled individuals and the elderly to improve their lives mentally and physically.
Since moving to San Diego Shelah dedicated much of her time to the National Post Polio Network serving as President and spokesperson for a several years, Lifetime Learners continuing education board member, and a variety of other community outreach programs. Shelah, was also an outspoken LGBTQ advocate and, of course,devoted mother and grandmother.
Her memory is a blessing and inspiration to live life on your own terms with strength of heart and will. A private family interment service will beheld at Mt.
