29. Joseph J. (JJ) SAUL^6,17,19,20 was born in 1857 in Russia.^17,19 Shelah Gershon Saul gives his birthdate as 1866 in her family tree (in the posession of Betsy Teplis). He immigrated about 1881. He was naturalized in 1890.¹⁷ Joseph appeared in the 1920 US census. In the 1920 Census, Joseph J. Saul (age 63) is listed with his wife Bessie (age 58, born in New York), his daughter Ruth (age 23, born in New York) and her husband Louis Gordon (age 25, born in Maryland), daughter Sophia (age 20, born in New York) and son Abner (age 16, born in Georgia). A son Sidney S. Gordon (error in surname?) is age 14 and was born in Georgia. He resided at 251 Rawson Street in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia, USA estimated 1930.²³ This is now under the highway. I researched location for Jewish Kehilah map with Joel Silverman and found a google picture of a homeless person there. I have not been able to find the photo in subsequent searches. Jan, 2024 He died on 29 July 1936 at the age of 79.²⁵ Joseph was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.^20,23,60 Judith Saul Stix documented JJ's early years in The Wise Child's Book. He seems to have come to America with his father and brother about 1881, staying in New York for a few years. About 1890 they moved to Washington, DC where they opened a clothing store with Jacob Shappirro. When JJ married Bessie Price in New York, he gave his address as 923 D Street, Washington, DC. In 1894 JJ and Bessie moved to New York with their daughters where he continued to work in the clothing business with his brother Harris. By 1900 they moved uptown to 108 East 87th Street. In addition to their four daugthers, they had a live in immigrant servant, Yata Mandel. About 1902, JJ moved his family to Atlanta. This move must have been planned for some time as he is listed in the 1899 City Directory of Atlanta as a member of J. Saul & Co. with a residence in New York City. In 1909, he was a member of the Jewish Educational Alliance board, formed to united educational support efforts of the German and Russian Jewish communities of Atlanta.

The 1920 Census gives an immigration date of 1880 and a naturalization date of 1890.

Joseph J. (JJ) SAUL and Bessie PRICE were married on 8 April 1891 in New York City, New York, USA.^23,60 Bessie PRICE, daughter of Moses Aaron PRICE and Sarah Minnie BAYLSON, was born on 28 September 1870 in New York City, New York, USA.¹⁷ She died on 1 October 1925 at the age of 55 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.²⁵ She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Joseph J. (JJ) SAUL and Mamie NUSSBAUM were married after 1925. Mamie NUSSBAUM was born in 1885. She died on 15 July 1954 at the age of 69.²⁵ She was buried on 16 July 1954 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
