32. Mary SAUL^6,24 was born in 1870 in Lithuania.²⁴

Mary SAUL and Jacob I. SHAPPIRIO were married in Lithuania. David Shappirio wrote me that "family lore had them meeting in Washington DC" (e-mail correspondence, April 18, 2004). Jacob I. SHAPPIRIO^6,19,62 was born in 1863 in Russia. According to the 1910 US Census, he was born in 1865. He immigrated in 1882 to USA.⁶³ He appeared in the 1900 US census.¹⁹ Jacob was naturalized.⁶³ He died in 1933 at the age of 70 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.⁶² He was buried in Adas Israel Cemetery in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.⁶² Jacob was a Broker, later general merchandise shopkeeper, 3068 M St NW, Wash. Jacob's original family name was Resz (pronounced as in 'Resh') in Russian. He left Russia to avoid military service in the army of Czar Alexander II, as Jews received bad treatment there. He wanted to change his family name to 'SHAPIRO' from Resz to avoid being traced by authorities. SHAPIRO wad the last name of his Talmud teacher in Russia, whom he greatly respected.

The name SHAPPIRIO (two P's and two I's) resulted, presumably having been misspelled by a tired (or illiterate) immigration clerk, and/or as a result of Jacob's strong 'foreign' accent.

ALL HIS IMMEDIATE FAMILY AND DESCENDANTS HAVE 'SHAPPIRIO'AS LAST NAME, EXCEPT WHEN WOMEN CHANGED THE NAME AT MARRIAGE (regardless of what may be seen in city or other directories anywhere!).

Jacob fell when crossing a busy DC street and broke his arm. This led to a fatal cerebral
hemorrhage (stroke).
